Once upon a time, inside a modest building of the Pelham community - magic happened: the first performance of Stevan Grebel’s The Nutcracker. Families in folding chairs packed into a small studioto watch young, talented dancers create Clara’s dream, as uniquely conceived and choreographed by a world-renown dancer and director.
Nine performances have passed since this debut, and now the magic is a community Tradition. Far from its humble beginnings, The Nutcracker is now performed in a large theater, with grand staging and lavish costumes. And one Angel in that first performance. . . is now the Sugar Plum Fairy. Like a strong family, Grebel is not only larger, but better, every year. Grebel grows dancers - one angel at a time.
The Nutcracker is but one showcase of the core program of Grebel and the Alabama Youth Ballet. Based on a vision to contribute and promote dance education in the Birmingham area as well as throughout the state of Alabama, Debbie Grebel formed the Alabama Youth Ballet Company as a 501c3 non-profit arts and education program. The program offers students of classical ballet the opportunity to train and perform with Directors Stevan and Deborah Grebel through high-quality classes featuring classical and contemporary ballet performances. The Alabama Youth Ballet Guild is the organized fundraising center for performances and the Annual Fundraiser, Dessertissements, a silent auction with wines, desserts and a performance.
We are asking for your support in continuing our flourishing success and future goals by becoming a Member of the Grebel Dance family. The excellence you see on stage, whether winter or spring, is the result of hundreds of volunteer hours. . . .and thousands of real dollars. What you do not see on the stage - from daily training, community outreach, to hosting guest artists - costs many real dollars as well. The Nutcracker is the icing: the cake is the world-class program that operates on a tiny budget 365 days a year.
